LKSS

(Lysholm Knee Scoring Scale)

Focus:

The Lysholm Knee Scoring Scale (LKSS) focuses on evaluating knee function, symptoms, and stability following ligament injuries or surgical interventions. It is one of the most widely used knee-specific PROMs for tracking recovery and functional outcomes in orthopedic and sports medicine patients.

Relevant Survey:

  • Body Part: Knee
  • Area Of Focus: Knee Pain, Instability, Ligament Injuries, Functional Limitations, Post-Surgical Recovery

The LKSS provides a standardized method for evaluating the severity of knee-related symptoms, supporting clinical decision-making, rehabilitation planning, and outcome monitoring.

The LKSS is a validated, patient-reported outcome measure designed to quantify pain, instability, swelling, locking, and functional limitations of the knee. It is frequently applied in both research and clinical settings to assess outcomes after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction and other knee-related treatments.

Description:

The Lysholm Knee Scoring Scale (LKSS) is a PROM developed to evaluate outcomes for patients with knee injuries, particularly those involving the ACL and other ligaments. It covers eight core domains: limp, support, locking, instability, pain, swelling, stair climbing, and squatting. Each category is weighted differently, producing a score ranging from 0 (severe disability) to 100 (no symptoms). Higher scores reflect better knee function. The LKSS is highly valuable for comparing pre- and post-treatment outcomes, monitoring rehabilitation progress, and assessing the effectiveness of surgical and non-surgical interventions.

Use Cases:

  • Primary Use:Measures functional recovery and symptom severity in patients with ligamentous knee injuries.
  • Target Conditions:ACL tears, meniscal injuries, multi-ligament knee injuries, and degenerative knee disorders.
  • Post-Surgery Assessment:Evaluates patient progress and functional gains following ACL reconstruction or other knee surgeries.
  • Sports Medicine Application:Useful in return-to-sport evaluations after knee injury rehabilitation.
  • Research Tool:Frequently used in clinical trials and outcome studies for standardization of knee outcome reporting.
