The Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) assesses pain severity and its impact on daily function. Originally developed for cancer pain, it is now widely used across chronic pain and musculoskeletal conditions.

Relevant Survey:

  • Body Part: General (not body-part specific)
  • Area Of Focus: Pain Severity, Functional Interference, Chronic and Cancer-Related Pain

The BPI is a validated PROM capturing both the intensity of pain and the degree to which pain interferes with daily life, mood, and activities.

The BPI is a widely recognized PROM developed by the MD Anderson Cancer Center. It includes numeric rating scales for pain intensity (worst, least, average, current) and questions about how pain interferes with sleep, mood, work, walking, and social relations. It has been validated across diverse patient populations and settings, making it a gold standard tool for pain research and clinical care.

Use Cases:

  • Measuring cancer-related pain in oncology patients.
  • Evaluating chronic musculoskeletal or neuropathic pain.
  • Assessing effectiveness of pharmacological pain management.
  • Tracking pain interference in palliative care.
