(Constant-Murley Score)
Focus:
The Constant-Murley Score focuses on assessing shoulder functionality by measuring pain, range of motion, strength, and daily activity capabilities. It is designed to offer a comprehensive view of shoulder performance, particularly in patients recovering from trauma, degenerative conditions, or surgical interventions
The Constant-Murley Score is a clinician-administered outcome measure that combines both subjective and objective evaluations. It is widely used in orthopedic research and practice to quantify shoulder function and track progress in patients undergoing surgical and non-surgical treatment.
Relevant Survey:
- Body Part: Shoulder
- Area Of Focus: Shoulder Dysfunction, Rotator Cuff Injury, Arthritis, Shoulder Surgery Recovery, Post-Traumatic Rehab
Used globally in orthopedic and physiotherapy settings, the Constant-Murley Score helps clinicians assess shoulder joint performance and recovery across different interventions. It enables consistent benchmarking and supports clinical decision-making by blending patient feedback with examiner-based measurements
Description:
The Constant-Murley Score is a clinician-administered PROM that evaluates shoulder function across pain, range of motion, strength, and activities of daily living. It blends objective measurement with patient feedback to offer a holistic view of impairment and progress. It is commonly used in post-operative monitoring and physical rehabilitation to guide care and benchmark recovery outcomes.
Use Cases:
- Primary Use: Measures comprehensive shoulder function including pain, movement, and strength.
- Target Conditions: Rotator cuff tears, osteoarthritis, shoulder impingement, fractures, post-operative shoulder cases.
- Post-Surgery Assessment: Used to track functional improvements after procedures like arthroscopy, shoulder replacement, or tendon repair.
- Other Applicable Patients: Ideal for evaluating recovery in physiotherapy and sports injury rehabilitation contexts.

Evaluates intensity and frequency of pain on a scale of 0–15.
Activities of Daily Living (20 points)
Covers sleeping, work, recreation, ability to perform tasks such as dressing or lifting.
Range of Motion (40 points)
Clinician-assessed measurement of active shoulder movements: forward flexion, abduction, external and internal rotation.
Strength (25 points)
Measures isometric strength using a dynamometer, particularly in abduction at 90°
