TAS

(Tegner Activity Scale)

Focus:

The Tegner Activity Scale (TAS) measures activity levels in patients with knee injuries, particularly ligament injuries. It quantifies the patient’s ability to return to work, daily activities, and sports, serving as a complementary tool to functional PROMs like the Lysholm Knee Scoring Scale.

Relevant Survey:

  • Body Part: Knee
  • Area Of Focus: Activity Level, Sports Participation, Functional Recovery after Knee Injury

The TAS is a validated PROM that grades activity levels on a scale from 0 (sick leave/disability) to 10 (elite-level competitive sports). It provides insight into functional recovery and helps clinicians evaluate treatment outcomes.

Description:

The TAS was developed to complement the Lysholm Knee Scoring Scale, specifically addressing the activity component often missing from other knee PROMs. It categorizes patients based on their highest level of physical activity, ranging from sedentary status to competitive professional sports. The TAS is highly valuable in sports medicine, orthopedic surgery, and rehabilitation for measuring return-to-sport outcomes.

Use Cases:

  • Tracking return-to-sport status after ACL or meniscus surgery.
  • Evaluating physical activity limitations following knee ligament injuries.
  • Complementary use with the Lysholm score for comprehensive assessment.
  • Monitoring progress in physical therapy and rehabilitation.
  • Standardizing activity levels in clinical research studies.

Number Of Questions:

One item with 11 graded levels:

  • 0 = Sick leave/disability due to knee problems
  • 1–4 = Work-related activities and low-level daily activity
  • 5–10 = Increasing levels of recreational and competitive sports
